100 Acts of Kindness Initiative: Volunteering at Squam Lakes Natural Science Center

As part of our ongoing 100 Acts of Kindness initiative, Grappone Automotive Group is excited to share another inspiring story of community involvement. This time, it’s about Mike and Kerri Roy, who recently volunteered their time and effort at the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing understanding of ecology by exploring New Hampshire’s natural world.

About Squam Lakes Natural Science Center

Founded in 1966, Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is dedicated to environmental education, nature appreciation, and wildlife conservation. The center’s mission is to teach about the natural world through live animal exhibits, natural science education programs, and trails that encourage visitors to connect with nature.

Mike and Kerri’s Volunteer Experience

Mike and Kerri’s recent volunteer work was multifaceted as they participated in three key tasks that significantly contributed to the center’s operations and environmental efforts:

1. Assisting the Wood Lot Volunteer Crew: Mike and Kerri helped stack cord wood and fix pallets, a crucial task as the center uses wood boilers to heat their main buildings during the colder months. They received fresh logs from local groups, which were then processed into cord wood and loaded onto pallets.

1. Preparing the Intern Cottage: They also cleaned the intern cottage and hung curtains. The cottage hosts college interns annually, who live there for about 11 weeks while they assist with education programs, marketing, and the volunteer program. Mike and Kerri’s efforts helped ensure a welcoming environment for the incoming interns.

1. Removing Invasive Plant Species: Mike and Kerri tackled invasive plant species around several beautiful tamarack trees. This ongoing effort prevents invasive vines from strangling the trees and highlights the importance of maintaining the natural habitat.

I’m so glad I got to share this day in the community with my dad before his retirement. I’m sure it’s something we will both remember for a long time to come!” – Kerri Roy

The day was filled with hard work, camaraderie, and the satisfaction of contributing to the preservation of New Hampshire’s natural beauty. Carol Raymond, Squam Lakes Natural Science Center’s Volunteer Manager, expressed her gratitude for Grappone’s support:
